REGIONAL VISION INITIATIVE Phase I of the Regional Vision Initiative was completed in December 2010 allowing extensive public polling prior to entering Phase II. The San Diego Foundation has convened the majority of local media outlets – radio, television, print and online – to hear directly from the team on this imperative initiative to preserve and protect what we love about San Diego, impact the challenges we will be facing over time, and plan for the development of our economic vitality, transportation, and affordable housing.

H.G. Fenton Fund Grant Demonstrates Trust and Service in Action The H.G. Fenton Fund was established with The San Diego Foundation in 2001 in part to support the education and technical training of young people entering the building and construction industries.
Team Godfather Grantmaking Story The Ramirez family is an inspiration to us all. When family and friends received the news that Michael Ramirez was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) they rallied together and, within eight months, formed the Team Godfather Charitable Foundation. Rather than being dependent on the efforts of others to discover a cure for his illness, Michael Ramirez leads his Foundation’s work to raise research funds to find cures for life-threatening diseases.
DONOR RECOGNITION DINNER The Foundation hosted the Seventh Annual Conversation with San Diego Community Builders. Malin Burnham was the guest speaker on Saturday, November 6 at the La Jolla Hilton Torrey Pines. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were served before the program. As a gift for Malin, guests wrote short notes with a special thought or memory. Malin’s presentation focused on his philanthropic philosophy and how we create a better San Diego through widespread civic engagement.
San Diego: Fastest Growing Region for Clean Jobs Industries account for one in ten jobs San Diego County stands out as an established leader in California in the remodeling of the business environment to leverage the growing clean economy according to The San Diego Foundation’s research. All trends indicate that clean energy and technology industries will be major job creators in the region for years to come.

Robert García Receives Prestigious Award The San Diego Foundation would like to congratulate Robert García, Founding Director of The City Project, for recently being awarded the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) prestigious Presidential Citation.
Parks for Everyone Event The San Diego Foundation’s Environment Program partnered with The City Project, REI, the Fletcher Family fund, and the Hattie Ettinger Conservation Fund, and many local nonprofit organizations to gain a better understanding of the state of green access in the San Diego Region. Parks for Everyone, integrated geographic, demographic, and economic data to understand how accessible our parks are and explored how to enhance accessibility to ensure that every neighborhood can benefit from the outdoors.
pARTners in philanthropy Arts & Culture and Donor Experience & Engagement hosted a pARTners in Philanthropy event on Thursday, January 27. Approximately 50 guests enjoyed 2 Pianos 4 Hands which is a musical, semi-autobiographical journey about two would-be concert pianists. The talented duo traded stories about piano lessons, parents, teachers, and exams while playing everything from Bach to Billy Joel. Guests were invited for a 20-minute talk-back with the actors after the performance.

The Health & Human Services Working Group approved a $235,000 grant to the Helen Keller National Center for an innovative program to train Support Service Providers (SSPs) to assist individuals who are both deaf and blind (known as deaf-blind). The grant, which closes out the Adelaide Allen Non-Endowment Discretionary Fund, will train up to sixty SSPs to provide up to 2,300 total hours of sighted-guide service to deaf-blind consumers – helping them with tasks such as attending doctor’s visits, going to the bank or the store, attending events and providing friendly companionship. This SSP program is the only program of its kind in the San Diego area and utilizes nationally renowned training curricula.
The Science & Technology Working Group sponsored a workshop on evaluation and assessment techniques on December 8, 2010. Participation in the workshop was a prerequisite for applying to the 2011 Science & Technology Community Grants program focusing on evaluation and assessment. In 2011, the grant program will assist math and science initiatives which apply the techniques learned in the workshop to develop evidence of their impacts.
Community Scholarship Program Undergoes Application Reviews The Community Scholarship program in the midst of application reviews. Nearly 8,000 scholarship requests were critiqued for eligibility and qualified applicants will be invited for interviews throughout March and April with notifications of awards being made in May.
Affiliate Leadership Summit The Leadership of The Foundation’s eight affiliates gathered for the second All Affiliate Leadership Summit on January 14. Seven of the eight affiliates were represented as well as The San Diego Women’s Foundation. Membership recruitment and retention strategies were shared and best practices were identified.
