Scholarships: Online Scholarship Application Process Provides the Pathway to Funding for Students

StudentsThis year’s launch of the Common Scholarship Application is as big and important as ever. The anticipated demand in this poor economy was confirmed by the almost 1,100 students who applied.

The Foundation plans to award approximately $3 million in scholarships in 2012 providing a wide variety of scholarships to graduating high-school seniors, current college graduates and adult re-entry students. Awards are granted to four-year universities, two-year colleges, graduate, and trade/vocational schools.

As the largest scholarship provider, outside of the university system, The San Diego Foundation provided the resources to award more than $2.5 million in scholarships to more than 650 students last year. The San Diego Foundation is uniquely positioned to allow donors the opportunity to be involved in the selection and interview process.

The San Diego Foundation is pleased to award nearly $2.5 million to make the educational dreams of nearly 650 recipients a reality. With the economy so volatile and rising tuition costs, The Foundation received 1,400+ applications totaling over 8,000 requests for individual scholarships. The donors who support the program provide hope to the youth whose future relies on a quality education.

Through The Foundation’s Scholarship Celebration Luncheons, donors and students have a chance to connect and share their personal stories. Students gain a better understanding of the donors’ passion for scholarships and donors learn more about the recipients they are supporting. Eight luncheon celebrations were held this spring, and Adrian & Betsy Gonzalez, who created the Adrian Gonzalez Scholarship, attended a luncheon just one day after Adrian played in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Arizona.

If you share this goal to provide a quality education to everyone in San Diego and want to establish a new scholarship fund or want to contribute to an existing scholarship fund at The San Diego Foundation, contact Arzo Mansury, Director of Scholarships and the San Diego Teachers’ Fund, at (619) 235-2300 or arzo@sdfoundation.org.
