In addition to the numerous scholarships offered as part of the Common Application, there are a number of other scholarships offered separately through our organization. Each scholarship requires its own set of application materials and deadlines.
We are pleased to provide a list of these individual and separate scholarships. We recommend that you contact each organization directly for more information.

Arthur H. Goodman Memorial Scholarship
Arthur Goodman was a true pioneer in the field of small business finance and community development. He founded CDC Small Business Finance Corporation in 1978, and spent the next twenty years building it into the most successful SBA Certified Development Corporation in the country. Art made community and economic development a core value and mission of the Corporation he created. He was very committed to the development of minorities and women in economic development and to those communities struggling to build a better economy.
In response to the many requests the CDC received from organizations and individuals expressing a desire to contribute to a cause in Art's memory, the CDC established the Arthur H. Goodman Scholarship Fund. The fund provides scholarships to women and minorities who are committed and engaged in their communities. Scholarships are targeted to those individuals graduating from a community college and transferring to a four-year university.
Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) College Success Scholarship
The Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) College Success Scholarship awards students whose academic excellence, personal ambition and achievements merit recognition. The goal of the scholarship is to assist students attend college without cost being the prime factor.
The BLCI Scholarship is meant to encourage students to achieve their college dreams while gaining professional experience and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. BLCI Scholars are chosen for their motivation to achieve a higher education, academic potential and passion for giving back to their community. Scholars will benefit from strong support systems including the BLCI College Success Program, a professional mentor, internship opportunities, and the ability to positively affect younger BLCI students by serving as role models for higher education.
The Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) Scholarship is open to:
- BLCI seniors who are on track to graduate from high school in the spring and will seek a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university in the United States
- Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 2.70 (grades 10-12)
- Demonstrate unmet financial need
- Exemplify leadership and commitment to their community
- If chosen, agree to participate in required program activities including monthly communications with the BLCI College Success Coordinator, mentorship and internship placement, and summer orientation program.
Scholarships are renewable (dependent upon available funds) for up to four years, provided recipients maintain eligibility. Award amounts are determined based on unmet financial need as shown on the SAR and school financial award letter.
Charles & Ardel Hamilton Scholarship
The Bonita Business & Professional Association (BBPA) established the Charles and Ardel Hamilton Scholarship in 1990 with assets they received from the Hamilton’s. The BBPA is responsible for marketing the scholarship and selecting the recipients while The San Diego Foundation manages the assets of the fund. Well-rounded students with a record of past achievement and future potential are encouraged to apply.
The Charles and Ardel Hamilton Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating seniors from Bonita Vista High School residing in Bonita, CA (zip code 91902) or Chula Vista, CA (zip codes 91910 or 91913) who plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year university in the United States
- Have a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Are citizens of the United States
- Children of BBPA members who are graduating from high school or continuing their education in a formal curriculum are also encouraged to apply
- Community service, academic achievement and financial need are considered in awarding this scholarship
The Charles and Ardel Hamilton Scholarship may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room & board.

David C. Sommerville Memorial Scholarship
The David C. Sommerville Memorial Scholarship was established by Plumbers & Pipefitters, Local Union 230 for the purpose of providing financial assistance to college bound children and grandchildren of Local Union 230 members.

Dr. Bertha O. Pendleton Scholarship Fund
For many years, Dr. Pendleton was the admired and respected superintendent for the San Diego Unified School District. When she retired in 1999, the Association of African-American Educators established a scholarship in her honor to promote and encourage students to pursue a career in the field of education.
The Dr. Bertha O. Pendleton Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating high school seniors from San Diego Unified School District who are pursuing a career in teaching and plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year university in the United States
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Have a strong record of responsible citizenship

Hans H. & Margaret B. Doe Scholarship
Hans Doe was known affectionately as “Mr. Water” in California. A major player in statewide water circles for more than 38 years, Hans was a two-term president of the Association of California Water Agencies, and served on the Board of Directors of the Vista Irrigation District, San Diego County Water Authority, and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Hans and his wife Margaret were tireless crusaders for water issues benefiting all Californians.
The Hans H. and Margaret B. Doe Scholarship is open to the biological, adopted or stepchildren of the employees at the Vista Irrigation District. Students may attend a trade/vocational school, two-year college, four-year university or graduate school, including medical and law. The criteria used in evaluating each scholarship application is based upon, but not limited to the following: academic achievement, financial need, extra-curricular activities/work experience, demonstrated leadership, good citizenship, and potential for future development.
The Hans H. and Margaret B. Doe Scholarship may be renewable for up to eight consecutive years provided the recipient maintains a positive academic and citizenship record. This scholarship may cover the entire cost of college including, but not limited to tuition, books, fees, and room & board.
James R. and Geraldine F. Bertelsen Scholarship
Mrs. Geraldine F. Bertelsen was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlsbad from 1955 until her death in 1994. She was a devout Catholic who valued her education at Catholic grammar and high schools. Mr. James R. Bertelsen was a retired Marine Master Sergeant, and, though not a Catholic, he always drove his wife to mass at St. Patrick's until his death in 1992.
The Bertelsen’s were married August 3, 1946, at the San Gabriel Mission. They were a very devoted couple who had hoped to raise their children in Carlsbad. Although the Bertelsen’s were unable to realize that dream and remained childless throughout their lives, their love for children continued to grow.
The Bertelsen’s believed that faith and education were the cornerstones in every successful community. To build upon their belief and to honor their love for children, the Bertelsen's estate established this scholarship in their family name to assist Catholic college-bound students. Due to the Bertelsen's exceptional generosity, this scholarship will continue to grow indefinitely, and the couple's dream will be realized. This scholarship is based first on academic achievement with need being a secondary consideration.
The James R. and Geraldine F. Bertelsen Scholarship is open to:
- Residents of Carlsbad, CA for a minimum of one full year
- Practicing Roman Catholics who are (1) graduating high school seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale who have applied to, been accepted by, and will attend a four-year Roman Catholic college or university in the United States, or (2) students who are currently enrolled at a Catholic college or university in the United States (students in their senior year of college, who will graduate early and not complete a full academic year, are ineligible)
- Plan to enroll in or are currently enrolled in a course of instruction that will enable them to obtain an undergraduate degree within four years
- Past recipients may re-apply if they maintain a GPA of 2.0 and a course of instruction that will enable them to receive an undergraduate degree within four years (previous recipients will compete with all other applicants)
This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees and on-campus room and board only.
Jonathan Hastings Foster Scholarship
Named in memory of Jonathan Hastings Foster, this scholarship will provide financial assistance to a graduating senior from Point Loma High School who will attend an accredited four-year college or university.
Jonathan graduated from Point Loma High School in 1997 as class valedictorian. He went on to pursue his love of mathematics at the University of Virginia where he was awarded a Jefferson Scholarship. After graduating in 2001 with a BA in Mathematics, he went on to teach high school math at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Wanting to achieve his life-long goal of teaching at the university level, Jon attended graduate school at San Diego State University and was working toward his doctorate at the University of Kansas in Lawrence when he died in February 2006.
Remembered as an accomplished scholar, it was his ability to see the simplicity in every complex problem that enabled him to be an exceptional teacher. Jonathan was also known as a kind, gentle, and compassionate person, always taking every opportunity to help others. It was his sense of humor and humble nature that allowed him to be loved and respected by all who knew him.
It is the hope of his family that the recipient of this award will exhibit the same passion for learning and helping others, as did Jonathan.
The Jonathan Hastings Foster Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating seniors from Point Loma High School who will attend an accredited four-year college or university in the United States
- Have a minimum 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Are actively involved in their community, as demonstrated by their involvement in extra-curricular activities, community service, and/or work experience
This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.

Marvin Arnold & Irene Jaquetta Heye Scholarship
The purpose of the Marvin Arnold and Irene Jaquetta Heye Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors planning to attend California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo or current students who are attending California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo.
The Marvin Arnold and Irene Jaquetta Heye Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating high school seniors planning to attend California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo or current students who are attending California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo
- Have declared a major in engineering
- Have a minimum 3.33 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Have a clearly demonstrated financial need based on family income and access to other resources
- Be actively involved in extra-curricular activities, community service, or work experience
- Preference will be given to students with a high financial need, former military personnel, and dependents of active military personnel
This scholarship may be renewable for up to four years provided the student maintains a positive academic (minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and citizenship record. This scholarship may used for tuition, books, fees, and room & board.

Pacific Beacon Scholarship
The Pacific Beacon Scholarship Fund was established by Pacific Beacon, LLC and the Clark Realty Companies to directly benefit the educational pursuits of active duty military residents at Pacific Beacon and Palmer Hall. This scholarship is made available through generous donations from Clark Cares and many of the local contractors and members of the local business community who helped build Pacific Beacon.
The Pacific Beacon Scholarship is seeking applicants who are able to demonstrate a formidable passion for post-secondary continuing education in the field of their choice. The fund is set up to provide tuition assistance and/or assistance with the cost of course materials (i.e. books, etc.) of up to $1,500 per award. Scholarship awards must be used to pursue educational credits at any accredited four-year university, two-year community college or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States and in any field of study regardless of a recipient’s United States Navy educational requirements.
The Pacific Beacon Scholarship is open to:
- All active-duty enlisted unaccompanied United States Navy personnel who are residents of Pacific Beacon or Palmer Hall at the time the application is submitted, and;
- Students planning to attend or who are currently attending a four-year university, two-year community college, or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States.
Ray and Mary Bell Memorial Scholarship
Raymond and Mary Bell were committed to the belief that a higher education was a necessity in life and that giving back to their community was a welcome obligation as citizens of Fallbrook, CA. The children of Raymond and Mary Bell established this scholarship in an effort to honor their parents and their altruistic belief system.
Raymond and Mary Bell both graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO in the early 1950’s. Both were the first in their respective families to obtain a college degree. Raymond made his mark in the engineering industry with a career that spanned over 40 years from Bell Labs to Hughes Aircraft Company. He held several patents during his 35 years with Hughes. He was well respected for his generous and calm leadership style.
Mary Bell raised their four children in Fallbrook, CA since 1971 and became a well-known philanthropic and civic minded figure. She was awarded the Fallbrook Citizen of the Year in 1986. She held an elected position on the parks and services board and was the Senior Events Coordinator at the Fallbrook Community Center. She was a member of the PTA, Newcomers Club, National Charity League, The Angel Society, Friends of the Fallbrook Library, AAUW, and the C-Notes.
Raymond and Mary Bell were members of the Fallbrook United Methodist Church for over 35 years where both held lay positions. Raymond and Mary Bell were a blend of academic excellence and community involvement; two fundamental principles of their lives.
The Ray and Mary Bell Memorial Scholarship is open:
- Graduating high school seniors from Fallbrook High School in Fallbrook, CA who plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year university in the United States
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Have a commitment to serving their community through their involvement in community service, church or extra-curricular activities
This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.
Rebecca Christine Lenci Thespian Memorial Scholarship
The Rebecca Christine Lenci Thespian Memorial Scholarship was established by the Lenci family in memory of their daughter and sister, Rebecca, who passed away.
The Rebecca Christine Lenci Thespian Memorial Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating seniors from Point Loma High School who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in theatre, film, or television as a major or minor area of study at an accredited two-year college, four-year university or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States
- Have a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Have successfully completed at least two drama classes while in high school (grades 9 through 12)
An ideal candidate for this scholarship will have earned membership for at least two years in a local troupe, or another troupe of the International Thespian Society. Special consideration will be given to students who are elected in a leadership position of a local troupe. Students whose parent(s) or guardian(s) have an income over $200,000 are ineligible to apply.

Sean Maloy Community Service Scholarship
This scholarship fund was created in memory of Sean Maloy, a loving husband and father, to recognize students who have shown an exemplary commitment to community service. This scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating high school seniors from Academy of Our Lady of Peace, St. Augustine High School, or senior residing in the community of Scripps Ranch.
The Sean Maloy Community Service Scholarship is open to:
- Graduating high school seniors from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, St. Augustine High School and students residing in Scripps Ranch who plan to attend an accredited two-year college, four-year university or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States
- Have a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale
This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.

The Club at Morningside Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2002 by members of The Club at Morningside for the employees and children of employees at The Club at Morningside in Rancho Mirage, CA.
The Club at Morningside Scholarship is open to:
- Employees (full-time or part-time) and children of employees at The Club at Morningside who have been employed for a minimum of two consecutive years on a seasonal or year-round basis
- Applicants must be graduating high school seniors, students already in school, or those planning to attend an accredited two-year college, four-year university, graduate school, or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States
- High school seniors and students currently enrolled in school must have a cumulative 2.50 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Other factors that may be considered include academic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service, work experience, and financial need
This scholarship may be renewable depending upon available funds and student compliance with requirements.
UCSD Chicano Alumni Scholarship
The UCSD Chicano Alumni Scholarship Fund was established by the UCSD Chicano Alumni Association in 1991 to support Chicano/Latino students enrolled at UC San Diego and encourage them to participate in MEChA at UCSD and in community service activities that benefit the Chicano/Latino community.
The ideal candidate for the UCSD Chicano Alumni Scholarship will be able to demonstrate a history of participating in MEChA at UCSD and a demonstrated record of community service activities that promote the cultural, economic, social and educational well being of the Chicano/Latino community. The activities include, but are not necessarily limited to, active participation in leadership positions and committees in MEChA, tutoring Chicano/Latino students in K-12 public schools or community colleges, volunteering in health clinics and other social services agencies serving the Chicano/Latino community. This scholarship is open to all undergraduate, graduate and professional students currently enrolled at UCSD. The scholarship award proceeds may be used at the discretion of the award recipient.
Virginia & Susan Hawk Scholarship
Aspiring opera and concert singers are one step closer to the Met and Carnegie Hall thanks to the Virginia and Susan Hawk Scholarship. Established many years ago, this fund provides scholarships to young opera and concert singers to further their studies.
