Special Projects
Murals of La Jolla
The Murals of La Jolla are the most visible of The La Jolla Community Foundation's arts and beautification projects. The purpose is twofold: to promote dialogue and connection among residents as well as to enhance the beauty and aesthetic character of the community. To date, five murals by contemporary artists – Roy McMakin, Kim MacConnell, Anya Gallaccio, John Baldessari and Ryan McGinness - have been installed on private buildings throughout the city, adding pops of color, beauty and fun to otherwise unused space. Keep an eye out for the sixth installment, coming soon from artist Ann Hamilton. More information is available at the Murals of La Jolla website.
Infrastructure Improvement
In addition to using massive works of art to freshen up La Jolla’s appearance, the LJCF is working on a variety of restoration and cleanup projects to ensure that the streets of La Jolla are as beautiful as its views. The first major project will be a makeover of “The Teardrop” – a dusty and disheveled 3,000-square-foot median at the intersection of Torrey Pines Road and La Jolla Parkway. The installation of decorative cobblestones will help eliminate weeds and discourage motorists from using the median as a garbage can. Stay tuned for news about upcoming cleanup projects sponsored by the La Jolla Community Foundation.
Coastal Environmental Pedestals
The La Jolla Community Foundation has a vision of installing educational pedestals along the La Jolla shoreline to provide residents and visitors with information about the coast's environment, animals and history. Two pedestals have been unveiled, including one overlooking the Pacific at the Birch Aquarium's Tide Pool.
La Jolla Fire Pits
When the City of San Diego sought to reduce costs by eliminating the fire pits on La Jolla Shores, the La Jolla Community Foundation granted the funds necessary for the preservation of these recreational assets.
