Nonprofit Partnerships: San Diegans Gave Bigger through giveBIG San Diego

GiveBigGiveBIG San Diego began as an idea to increase philanthropic giving in the San Diego region for local nonprofits whose vital services make our community a better place to live. The sophistication of the nonprofit outreach and generosity of San Diegans far surpassed our predictions, and together, we generated more than $2 million in donations in 36 hours.

The San Diego Foundation provided $275,000 in matching funds from our limited discretionary funds resulting in a 13% match. The San Diego Foundation covered all website development costs and transactions fees out of our matching funds resulting in a 7% net match to all nonprofits.

The San Diego Foundation Nonprofit Partnerships Program hosted a forum on January 10th to garner feedback from the nonprofit community and develop best practices and explore the possibility of making giveBIG an annual fundraising event. We will keep you posted if a generous donor or philanthropic organization decides to partner with us in 2012 to increase these matching funds and thereby increasing the benefit to our nonprofit partners.

The San Diego Foundation would like to thank our generous media partners, ABC 10News and Azteca San Diego 15, who provided more than a million dollars worth of commercials to ensure the community was aware of this first-ever giving opportunity.

Fieldstone Foundation Learning Groups

The San Diego Foundation will be offering the Fieldstone Foundation Executive and Emerging Leaders groups for the second year in a row. We have our two classes set for this year, with eleven attendees for each group. The Fieldstone Foundation offers nonprofit executives and emerging leaders the opportunity to participate in a professional development program designed to support their leadership while impacting the organization’s operations, programs and sustainability. These groups offer leadership development experience that combines education and training with peer learning in an intimate and confidential environment.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity Establishes $214,000 Endowment at The San Diego Foundation

Habitat for humanitySan Diego Habitat for Humanity has established a $214,000 agency fund as an endowment at The San Diego Foundation. The charitable fund assures that the mission of Habitat for Humanity to build simple, decent and affordable homes for ownership by local families in need will continue in perpetuity.

“San Diego Habitat for Humanity (SDHFH) is an independently governed affiliate of and does not receive any funding from Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). As such, it needs to ensure that its local programs are protected in the future,” said Bradford Bates, President and CEO of San Diego Habitat for Humanity. “We must attract donors who evaluate and support organizations with endowments, and made the decision to partner with The San Diego Foundation due to its fundamental commitment to improving quality of life for all San Diegans. There’s a strong synergy between us,” Bates said.

One family of five benefited from the efforts supported by the San Diego Habitat for Humanity enabling them to move into their own home after residing in a relative’s garage for nine years.
