In May, Innovation Through the Arts was unveiled at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park after a year-long planning process by the Arts & Culture Working Group. Civic leaders from all sectors: philanthropists, nonprofit partners, elected officials, business executives, and artists joined for this exciting launch.
There are three programs within Innovation Through the Arts. The Creative Catalyst program, departs from the traditional grantmaking practice of supporting art institutions by directing support to individual artists. Creativity in the Classroom encourages arts integration in school coursework to instill innovative and creative thinking, and Business of the Arts provides professional development opportunities for artists and nonprofit arts and culture organizations.
The San Diego Foundation also completed the “A Portrait of San Diego Artists” survey which is the first research of its kind to accurately provide a snapshot of the characteristics and needs of the artist community in the San Diego region. Jim Chute highlighted this imperative research and innovative initiative as the cover feature in the Arts section of The San Diego Union-Tribune titled “A Different Shade of Green.”
